Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Co.–Nonfiction Bookbag
Alex Haley joined us as the general editor of a 26-book, multicultural series called the Metro Nonfiction Bookbag. In this role, Mr. Haley provided editorial direction through all stages of book development and wrote a special introduction for each title. The books in this collection are part of Alex Haley’s legacy to the education of America’s young people.
CCI wrote the 5th and 6th grade levels of the student editions.
The LinkIt! Reading Story Books
For K–3 students who are English learners or struggling readers in intervention classes, CCI developed a series of 28 stories that provide practice in all key phonics skills. The “graphic novel” style offers high appeal to the reader—and avoids the “baby book” appearance that makes struggling readers uncomfortable.
The LinkIt! Math Story Books
Adventures and real-life problems can be solved only with clever math thinking in these graphic novel math mysteries, Nina and Juan Save the Day! and Juan and Nina To the Rescue!
Portals, a middle school reading/ELA intervention program, was designed for students in grades 4–8 who were reading at least two grades below level. For older students who were not yet decoding basic English words, we created decodable text using the popular “graphic novel” style.

It also features Chicago’s special people and events!

Detroit Social Studies
Under Metro, we “won” the Social Studies adoption at the K¬2 levels—with no books submitted. The reason? The Detroit adoption committee did not believe that the submitted textbooks reflected the people and places of Detroit. We created the complete program in several months, delivering it on schedule. The program was a great success.
Problem Solving Step-by-Step
Assessment data demonstrated to our team that developing solid problem solving skills was a high priority mathematics need in the largely urban school districts that constituted the primary focus of Metropolitan Teaching and Learning Company. This program spanned grades 1–8 and taught key problem solving strategies.

Designed for use in the Portals reading intervention program, this handy word diary puts the responsibility for understanding word meaning in the hands of the student. Students evaluate their understanding of key words from the beginning of a unit to the end, using a scale that spans the categories “I’ve Never Heard of It” to “I OWN it." Making a personal connection to important words helps students remember their meanings. The use of such varied graphic organizers as a Definition Map helps students explore key words from several points of view.
Mapping the African-American Past
